High Altitude Bombing PREFACE: The following procedure will help you to become a more accurate and effective bomber pilot. This is a procedure that I have come to realize is the easiest and fastest way to be "drop bomb ready" and be so accurate that you can hit a gnat on a fleas arse at 10,000ft.
Chapter 1: Flight plan
The first thing you should do before you even take off is to have a "Flight Plan". This plan should include the target you wish to destroy, a flight path to your target, and the altitude you wish to be at at the time of your "Bombing Run". "Bombing Run" is the term I use for when you come to the point in flight where you go level and get ready to calibrate to drop your bombs.
Chapter 1: Flight plan
The first thing you should do before you even take off is to have a "Flight Plan". This plan should include the target you wish to destroy, a flight path to your target, and the altitude you wish to be at at the time of your "Bombing Run". "Bombing Run" is the term I use for when you come to the point in flight where you go level and get ready to calibrate to drop your bombs.
1)Targets: There are several different kinds of targets. Please refer to the clipboard map for the location and number of targets per each size of base.
2)Flight path: The path from the Base where you Take Off to the Target. I generally Take Off from a base where I can climb-out about 1 and a half sectors before coming to the Radar of the target.
3)Altitude: Altitude is very important. You want to be at least 8,000ft to avoid being shot down by ack. On the other hand, you want to be high enough as to not allow enemy fighters to be able to climb up with you and kill you without dropping a single bomb.
4)Direction of Flight: Pick a departure base that will allow you to get more altitude as possible. Look on the map for the best "Line-up" for your "Bombing Run" considering the size of base you are attacking.
CHAPTER 2: Picking a Direction of Flight
When you have picked your bomber, load-out, and amount of fuel from the hanger, Go to the Tower and see which is the best direction to Take-Off. Make sure you DO NOT pick a direction where you will not have enough room to climb out even if you have to turn. The best directions are ones that will take a minimum of turns to be lined up to drop as many targets in one pass. Once you have picked a direction, you are ready to Take Off.
CHAPTER 3: Taking Off
When your plane hits the runway for Take Off, make sure you have your flaps UP. This is accomplished by hitting the "w" key twice. Auto climb out and wait for drones to attach themselves to your plane. Once they have attached themselves, you now become a "Flight". You are now ready to turn for you first leg of your flight plan.
CHAPTER 4: Route to Target
Once you are on auto climb and your drones have attached themselves, you will get the best climb rate for the distance traveled by setting a speed of 5 mph slower than the default indicated speed located on your E6B page. To engage a speed command, you must type in the speed command. For Example: If you are in Lancasters and want to get the best climb rate for the distance traveled, use a speed of 150. Type in .speed 150...and from the F-3 mode, you will see your nose rise slightly. Also be advised, plan a route that will not be going over factories or towards enemy cons. When you arrive at the targets Radar Circle, prepare for your "Bombing Run".
CHAPTER 5: The Bombing Run
Once you have gained the altitude you want (at the targets Radar Circle) and you have turned to target, go to auto level, open bay doors, and throttle back to a Boost of 1. In Lancasters, this should level out with a climb rate of +1/-1 to ZERO. NOTE: That can be done with any Hi-Alt bomber by checking the MPH and MP (max cruise) located and listed in the E6B. Throttle back/forward to get your climb rate at 0. When you have reached this then go to F-6 mode and calibrate.
CHAPTER 6: Calibration
Calibration is done using the F-6 mode. Once in bomb sites, press "u" then press "Y" and hold for at least 2 seconds. Holding down "y" for 8 to 10 seconds gives you a better calibration. Then press "u" again. Use your "J' and "L" buttons (rudder control) to line up on targets. Keep your E6B up for quick check on true speed in relation to calibrated speed and climb rate. If your speeds get off from the rudder turn, throttle to compensate. If your true speed is slower than your calibrated speed then "Pickle" your salvo a bit past the target. If your true speed is faster, then "Pickle" a bit before the target.
CHAPTER 7: Salvo and Delays
Salvo is the number of bombs that will drop when you "Pickle". Delay is the spacing between bombs when you "Pickle".
1)500lb bombs - A Salvo of 3 with a Delay of .05 is effective if you are calibrated "On the Money". A salvo of 4 with a Delay of .06 is effective if your calibrated speed is +/- 2 off.
2)1,000lb bombs - A salvo of 2 with a Delay of .05 is effective if you are calibrated "On the Money". A salvo of 3 with a delay of .06 if you are +/- 2 off.
